Art Smart: Jayde Cardinalli
We’re always on the look out for cool artists to inspire us (and feature on our mood board and office desktops). Our latest artist obsession? Jayde Cardinalli! We love her use of interesting prints and charming silhouettes. So we just had to pick her brain a little to find out more about what makes her tick—and, of course, her personal style.

STYLUST: When did you realize you wanted to become a designer and illustrator?
JAYDE: My major in college was marine biology for two years before realizing that it just wasn’t a good fit. I had taken fine art courses since I was really small and loved to draw and paint. When I moved to San Francisco in 2005 I called some art schools and told them I wanted to draw pictures while making some money. I was advised to consider graphic design. It was great advice and I love it. The illustration in my design came naturally and has now become the thing I do most often.
STYLUST: Where do you find inspiration?
JAYDE: I get a lot of inspiration from fashion—interesting mixes of patterns, textures and color palettes are all things I look for. I can spend hours in a vintage or thrift store looking through buttons, fabric swatches and old magazine ads. I’m also inspired by people watching.
STYLUST: What is one thing most people don’t know about you or your work?
JAYDE: I’d really like to start drawing on cakes.
STYLUST: How would you describe your personal style?
JAYDE: Like a hot toddy on a cold night—old timey and comfy with a bit of a kick.
STYLUST: Name a single item in your closet that you can’t live without.
JAYDE: Cashmere cardigans. They are perfect for SF’s fickle weather.
STYLUST: Do you have any parting advice for aspiring artists?
JAYDE: Make friends with artists you look up to. My designer friends and I all throw each other work; it’s a great thing. They keep me motivated too.
