Styling Tips: Jolyn Styles a White Blouse for 3 Occasions
This week, our go-to area manager and stylist Jolyn is back with advice on working a classic blouse beyond the office! Check out her latest outfit ideas and tips below.
There’s something so refreshing about a crisp, white, poplin blouse. It’s one of those staple items that create a go-to look in a flash without being too…well, flashy. The versatility of this seemingly plain and simple shirt is really what makes it a MUST for your fall, winter, spring and summer wardrobes. So I stress: get yourself a white poplin blouse (and if you already have one, consider getting another!) as the styling options for this basic top are endless. If you don’t believe me, read on, my fellow fashionistas, because this one piece will keep you perfectly sexy yet polished for any occasion, be it work, a casual weekend outing or a fabulous party.
WORK IT>> Poplin shirts have gotten a bad rap primarily because we’ve stereotyped them as strictly boring, wear-to-work items. Let’s be honest: we’ve seen it all before…a white poplin shirt worn under a black suit (yawn). It’s okay if you’ve fallen culprit to this look, but believe me, even the most basic of tops can always be spiced up. Try pairing a poplin shirt with a structured dress, as featured in this look, or under a sweater with a pair of cigarette pants. The options are endless…appropriate attire for the workplace does NOT have to be boring, so give poplin a chance to “work it.”

WEEKEND CHIC>> If you think only dapper, preppy guys can get away with layering a sweater over a fitted shirt…think again. This look really does say “effortless,” and it is. You don’t even need to break out your iron for this look as our staple poplin shirt fits nicely under any sweater (hiding those pesky wrinkles) and gives you a pop of prep, while a chunky knit sweater, hoops and your fave denim keep the look flirty. Who knew being fashionable could be so easy? Note: Want to turn it up a notch? Layer your poplin shirt over a lightweight sweater for another weekend look.

PARTY TIME>> Play up your white poplin top with statement items for a look that says you’re ready to party but with sophistication. (Champagne, anyone?) Our staple poplin top paired with this sequin circle shirt, bold accessories and a menswear-inspired blazer keeps this look polished, put together and party perfect. Keep in mind that your poplin blouse should play a supporting role to a bolder, more fashion-forward item when creating a party look. The poplin shirt pairs perfectly with the sequin skirt of this look without “stealing the show” or overdoing it. Also be sure to create extra interest with your poplin shirt. If the sleeves are cuffed, fold them over the sleeves of your jacket to give the look a pop and add some dimension. Play with the collar, leaving it open or buttoning it up based on your comfort level. Whatever you do, have fun!
