Styling Tips: Jolyn Shares 4 Ways to Flaunt the Hi-Lo Trend
In fashion there are highs and lows. For example, neons right now are a fashion high, while scrunchies, in my mind, will always be a fashion low (and don’t pretend like you’ve never owned or worn a scrunchie). One of my favorite things about fashion is that we all win and fail together when it comes to trends. Sometimes we take risks that pay off. And sometimes…well, scrunchies happen.
Have no fear, however, as this post isn’t about the epic highs and lows of fashion but instead the even more epic highs and lows of hemlines. Yes, I said it, HEMLINES. The hi-lo (high in the back, short in the front) look is a fun twist we’ve been spotting on dresses, tops and even skirts…so get ready to enjoy the ups and downs of this fun new look!
PROPORTION PLAY>> There are two highs in this look: the high-waisted striped skirt paired with the hi-lo sheer white top…gorgeous. The top can be worn open or closed, tucked or flowing, but most of this entire outfit can be worn ANYWHERE. And did you notice the pleat detail on the back of the top? How accordion chic! Details make a difference, so make them count. I love the ankle-wrap, silver-detail stilettos with this look and coordinating cuff bracelets. Hi-lo…it’s the way to go.

STRIPE APPEAL>> Who knew stripes could be so sexy? Not only is the cut of this dress flattering, but so is the diagonal striped pattern. Pair with white and gold accessories and ankle-wrap wedges, and you’re done. It’s almost a crime to look so good with so little effort! Don’t say I didn’t warn you if you get a ticket for being H-O-T because this hi-lo hem shows the perfect amount of leg and definitely will have heads a-turnin’.
GET THE LOOK >> Remy Hi-Lo Striped Halter Dress (196247, $98), Decisive Aviator Sunglasses (189391, $89), Maggie Mirrored Perforated Tote (195896, $109), Kelly Strappy Sandal Wedge (currently unavailable on bebe.com, but check your local bebe store)
TROPIC ROMANCE>> You know that Mariah Carey song ‘Obsessed’? The one that goes, “Why are you so ob-sessed with me?” Well, that’s the anthem for this outfit. Words do not do this dress justice, so it’s only natural that a song should be devoted to it. From the double straps to the caged back to the jungle print to the studded wedges and clutch, this look is absolutely stunning. Not to mention my favorite part (no, not the plaque necklace, although I do love that too): the hi-lo hem. One of my favorite things about hi-lo dresses is that they’re beautiful in motion and make walking look like you’re on the runway. So, my fellow fashionistas, get out your iPod, turn on some Mariah and get ‘ob-sessed’ with this look.
GET THE LOOK>> Hi-Lo Corset Top Maxi Dress (198525, $179), Overlapping Hammered Necklace (currently unavailable on bebe.com, but check your local bebe store), Quilted Pyramid Stud Clutch (195764, $69), Katarina Metallic Studded Wedge Sandal (196740, $139)
CUE THE BRIGHTS>> Lime shorts, a statement necklace and a hi-lo hem add up to an ensemble that says ‘look at me, look at me’ without screaming ‘I’m trying too hard.’ This is a subtle take on the hi-lo trend but still a statement look as you don’t notice the varying lengths in hemline from front to back unless you’re looking for this chic little detail. What I’m trying to say is people will notice you’re looking fab without exactly knowing why. You have three trends going on in this look—neon, tribal and hi-lo—yet you’re left with a result that’s pulled together and really requires little effort.
