Art Smart: Q&A with Fashion Illustrator Inslee Haynes
The fashion world is endlessly inspired by talented artists, and Inslee Haynes is one of our favorites! She’s turned her childhood love of drawing into a dream career, founding her own illustration business with an emphasis on fashion. We recently asked Inslee to dish about her passion and her thoughts on style. Read on for all the deets!
STYLUST: Did you always know you wanted to be an artist? How did you get your start?
INSLEE: Yes! I have been drawing my whole life. It has always been a natural impulse for me to sketch figures on any scrap of white paper I could find. I took a course on fashion illustration in high school at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago that really inspired me to pursue illustration as a career.
STYLUST: What inspires you?
INSLEE: Well, this might sound obvious, but FASHION! I love seeing runway shows and celebrities on the red carpet, but the aspect of fashion that inspires me most of all is real women on the streets of New York wearing styles in unique ways that suit their daily lives. The individual creativity is so interesting. Each woman’s personal tastes and body type and sense of style instruct the way she presents herself, and that tells such a special story and ultimately really makes life more interesting.
STYLUST: Describe your personal style in three words.
INSLEE: Classic, feminine, a little bit retro…and I love navy blue and black. Oops, too many words!
STYLUST: What key fall/winter trends are you currently obsessed with?
INSLEE: I really want a cape! I’m starting to see them everywhere and they look like fun to wear.
STYLUST: What are your top go-to blogs?
INSLEE: I always love OscarPRGirl’s glamorous snapshots, and Garance Doré never fails to entertain me.
STYLUST: Any parting words for our readers or advice for aspiring artists?
INSLEE: I saw a quote recently and it really stuck with me: “Do what you love. You’ll be better at it!” I can’t agree enough with this. Find your own unique style, and I promise you will feel inspired and enthusiastic about what you are creating. And in turn, it will be more beautiful.
