Red Carpet Commentary: Met Gala 2011

Yesterday may have just been an average, any ole’ Monday for the rest of the world, but for fashion it marked the 63rd annual Costume Institute Gala at the Metropolitan Museum of Art—otherwise known as the Met Gala, and one of our absolute favorite red carpet events of the year! As per usual, the A-list in attendance did not disappoint. Who stepped out sartorially on top? Read on for all the deets as our PR Manager Alexis dishes on everything from the top trends spotted to the designers behind each fabulous look.

Who do you think most deserves the title of “Best Dressed?”

BOLD COLOR. “Love these cheery, upbeat colors—they scream Spring has sprung. Neon pink is my personal lust right now, and I love that Brooklyn went for it in a long sleeve dress. It works perfectly with her straight/short blonde locks. And Dianna… So sleek and polished, she always looks good. Love the red.”

Photos, from left to right: Brooklyn Decker wearing Giambattista Valli (Larry Busacca/Getty), Zoe Saldana wearing Calvin Klein (Larry Busacca/Getty), Dianna Argon wearing Michael Kors (Stephen Lovekin/Getty).

EMBELLISHED NUDES. “Blake channels a Grecian goddess is this gray & nude lace confection—I’m ready for a toga party! And Gwyneth…pure perfection. Love the champagne hue, it’s form fitting shape & subtle shimmer. All three of these ladies prove nude only gets better when embellished.”

Photos, from left to right: Ashley Greene wearing Donna Karan (Stephen Lovekin/Getty), Blake Lively wearing Chanel (Larry Busacca/Getty), Gwyneth Paltrow wearing Stella McCartney (Larry Busacca/Getty).

CHIC CUTOUTS. “Love these daring peekaboo cutouts! Shows just a hint of sexiness. Emma Roberts looks so beautiful and sleek in this one-shoulder white dress. And Ginnifer really makes a statement with the bold green—it’s great to see her be more edgy since she generally tends to play it safe on the red carpet.”

Photos, from left to right: Kerry Washington wearing Escada (Stephen Lovekin/Getty), Emma Roberts wearing Michael Kors (Larry Busacca/Getty), Ginnifer Goodwin wearing custom Topshop (Stephen Lovekin/Getty).

GOLD GODDESS. “You can almost never go wrong with gold. All about the glamour. Kristen and Claire both look so pretty, almost au natural. And Elizabeth working the head-to-toe sequins with the coral lip—such an Old Hollywood glamour moment.”

Photos, from left to right: Kristen Bell wearing Tory Burch (Stephen Lovekin/Getty), Elizabeth Banks wearing Tommy Hilfiger (Stephen Lovekin/Getty), Claire Danes wearing Calvin Klein (Stephen Lovekin/Getty).

ORNATE ELEGANCE. “Ornate as ever, I love it, so glam. Diane, talk about showing some leg! Love that she left little to the imagination in this bold slit—with legs like that, I say go for it! And only our girls Rihanna and Beyoncè could pull off these skin-tight creations… Sasha Fierce is bringing it here!”

  1. No one deserves to be best dress.. where’s the aesthetic creativity in the dresses? Nothing outstanding.

  2. I loved it wish I could have been apart of it awesome!

  3. I think Ashley Greene is the best here.

  4. Great pictures! I think Brooklyn Decker and Kerry Washington look the best!

  5. I think they all look alike…

  6. Emma Roberts, my word is final!

  7. It seems a great ceremony.

  8. I really like Blake Livele’s dress…soo unique!

You don’t have her pic here, but Selma Hayek wore a goregous peach colored organza gown. It was so breath-takingly beautful, simply yet elegant and I think it tops my list of best dressed!

  10. Beyonce…what on earth are you wearing?

  11. The only thing I know is ,I have seen many beautiful pictures and I have learned many new words….My dictionary is very useful.

  12. Beyonce looks like she can’t even move in her dress. That is the only one I do not like at all.

  13. Hello -

All such beautiful women, but I’m kind of partial after seeing Kerry Washington’s photo….very nice ; ) Have a good Wednesday. :)

  14. It may be ’cause they’re so photogenic and know how to pose but Brooklyn Decker and Blake Lively stand out. Kudos to Ginnifer for doing something different. Most unremarkable: Rihanna, Beyonce, and Kristen Bell.

  15. Ashley Greene gets my vote.

I don’t like the bold-color dresses – they make the wearers look like crayons, especially the pink one, where the sleeves only make it worse. Sorry!

  16. Is it me or are some of these girls sooooooooo skinny?????? Especially the bold color dresses, look at the hip bones jutting out? evelyngarone.com

  17. HI–CAN SOMEBODY DO A STORY ON THE FASHIONS OF “GOSSIP GIRL”. I’D LIKE TO KNOW WHERE THEY GET THOSE EARRINGS?

  18. What beautiful dresses. I for one love them! Blake Lively gets my top vote through.
By the way, your blog is SO lovely. x

  19. Beyonce looks like she is humpty dumpty and about to fall on her face… what was she thinking?
I agree with you on Brooklyn Decker- hot, hottie, NEON! Love!

  20. Either Diane or Emma, those are my most favorite. Blake looks good too…

  21. beautyfull Emma!

  22. I love the gold and neutral color’s. They look great on any skin tone.

  23. None of these are quite as ornate and extravagant as I’ve come to expect from this particular red carpet. Where was all the drama????

  24. is it wrong to like them all? I mean, they all are very attractive women :)

  25. I love this Michael Kors Emma Robert is wearing. An i love when donna karan make gorgeous gowns (because everyone says she is average heheheh)

    Lovely blog!!

  30. Well! My favorite topic! Which dress does gmom like?? or not…
Beyonce looks ready to say” My gown is from House of Derriere.” Uh yeah. Too tight too weird. Are those nipple tattoos?
Gwynth…you are all grown up now, stand up straight…Shakespeare In Love was a long long time ago. You are on Glee now.
Rihanna? Really? I just wonder if she is ever going to look her age which is something like 21. She looks way older.
Dianna Agron she is so pretty but that dress is doing something strange to her barely there bosom.
Zoe Saldana, great smile, great color dress. simple and honest. I love it.She wins.

  31. Honestly I don’t like any of these dress design. For me look old fashion, without creativity and bad colors combinations and details.

  32. i love every single outfit..even the weird ones :)

  33. Zoe Saldana= best

Beyonce just looks really awkward and uncomfortable!

  34. such gorgeous dresses!!

  35. i really like the layout of you blog. It very clean and sleek.

  36. looks cool and seems really interesting.

  37. Many girls have soooooo beautiful faces and dress but Ashley Greene is so nice and her dress is sooooo nice.

  38. Emma Roberts wins it for me. She just brought her aunt full circle. That dress is like the modern, sophisticated version of the one Julia wore in “Pretty Woman”. Loves it!

  41. Blake looked so flawless and Rihanna had such an edgy/elegant look to her! LOVED IT!

  42. I can understand the press’ response to Beyonce’s dress, “It’s to tight and it’s just to much, she could barely get up the stairs with help,” but, for God’s sake, She’s Beyonce. She literally could pull off wearing a banana costume. I think everyone looked absolutly stunning in their own way; Kudos to everyone!

  47. Love the long dressy gowns! Blake gets the dramatic prize, but my favs are Kerry Washington (vision of spring) and Ashley Greene (glam.)

  48. Rihanna hairstyle is *** horrible. She looks better with a short black hair.

I love Ginnifer Goodwin dress… so fabulous.

  49. This is called stunning beauty….

  50. I am dying over Ginnifer Goodwin’s necklace.

  51. Rihanna’s look is absolutely awful! I love the pastel green dress though!!!

  62. My favorite by far is Diane Kruger wearing Jason Wu. Stand out.

  63. Beautiful! I love the trio of photos; such a tidy grouping.

  64. Kerry Washington’s Escada dress is nothing short of beautiful. If you ask me not a lot of people can pull off classy and sexy at the same time.
