Exclusive! On Set With Kime Buzzelli: Making of the ‘bebe for 90210′ Collection
bebe for 90210 has officially arrived! Meet the designer behind the collaboration: Kime Buzzelli, Costume Designer for The CW’s hit show 90210, and all-around California-cool girl. Here, she gives us an exclusive peek around the set—including The Beach Club (with gorgeous painted ocean backdrop, can you believe that’s not real?!), a look inside the main wardrobe closet (let’s face it: it’s more like a mini-warehouse), her personal office slash cast fitting room (major), and some of the most amazing watercolor illustrations of the cast, hand painted by the talented stylist herself—plus she dishes on every need-to-know detail on the making of the collection, designed right here in one of fashion’s hottest zip codes!
bebe: Tell us about being a stylist for a hit TV show: What is your process like for styling the cast?
Kime: Generally we break down the script first to see what character developments are happening. I like to base a lot of their clothes on what the mood is for the scene, or what they’re going to be doing. Then, I work with their bodies—there are certain styles that fit better on certain people. I do sometimes get input from the actors, from our Showrunner who has amazing fashion taste and the writers as well—but I like to put my own spin on it.
bebe: What role does fashion play on 90210?
Kime: The fashion on the show is really important in the sense that it’s California fashion. I try to make the show reflective of the colors of LA and I like the idea of reflecting our lifestyle. You know, frivolous platform sandals and a lot more color. In New York, everyone’s generally wearing black, but in LA, people aren’t afraid to wear bright colors, crazy prints and patterns and mismatched things—and that comes through in the show.
bebe: How were you inspired by the show during the design process?
Kime: Working on the collection, we wanted to try to take what bebe’s customer already is, then take what our girls are, and make something that can meet in the middle and be for any girl. The end result is great for the girl who can wear classic items many different ways. I wanted to try to stay away from too much embellishment. To me California-classic is about pieces you will wear all the time. I kept thinking, “This simple, sexy dress is enough.” Naomi is HOT, she doesn’t need all these things happening—you can do that with your own accessories. And bebe has great jewelry, so you can layer on necklaces if you’re like Silver. If you’re not Silver, if you’re more like Naomi, you might just have a cuff. That’s the fun of it: You get to have your own take on it.
bebe: How does this collection represent 90210?
Kime: I think the clothes totally reflect our characters’ unique style. Naomi is obviously very tailored, modern, sophisticated—very structured, so to speak. All the clothes we had in mind for her when we were designing the collection are sort of sexy but also very streamlined. The stuff I had in mind for Adriana are very feminine, beautiful things that accent the waist with an A-line flair. For Silver, we were doing a lot of mixing and matching of pieces—so there’s a lot of cute blouses that tie at the top, that are part feminine, part rock’n’roll. I think our fans might think, “Oh that’s very Adriana,” but they can take that and implement it into their own wardrobe.
bebe: Who do you think this collection is made for?
Kime: In my mind, it’s for the girl who thinks outside the box—who can take the components, they can see it on TV, but then they take it and mix it with their own wardrobe. So she doesn’t have to take the whole outfit, per say, but she can get pieces from it and mix and match it with other stuff—fun accessories, a cool scarf from your own closet. To me, that’s what fashion is: It’s the things that trick out your wardrobe. So, here are some pieces that are really great: have fun with them, add to them, and make them yours!
