Ask A Stylist: Your Red-Hot Style Questions Answered
It’s that time of the year again: Valentine’s Day is right around the corner and we are officially seeing red. What to wear? What to bring? How to look cute amid this east coast snow-pocalypse? Our stylist Valerie dishes up her tips and tricks for keeping it together on the date night of the year.
Q: Is it totally cheesy to wear red on Valentine’s Day?
A: Is it totally cheesy to wear a white gown when you walk down the aisle? No way! Valentine’s Day is all about hot hues, and we say embrace it. If you’re a little wary about going over-the-top festive, opt for an LBD and add in pops of color: a red shoe, lipstick and nail shade are a classic case in point. Or nix the red altogether and go for a gorgeous fuchsia or pouty pink.
Q: The weather is horrible where I live! How can I hit date-night looking chic when it’s freezing cold out?
A: Below zero may not be the most chic of all fashion conditions, but that’s why we have tights! Start the night with a long wool cover-up coat, gloves as usual and a pair of thick wool tights with a sexy shoe. Once you get to your destination, check your coat at the door and flaunt your favorite date-night dress. Another key element to make the look work: Forget the walk…Call ahead for a car service or grab a cab! You (and your poor feet) can thank me later.
Q: Valentine’s Day falls on a Monday this year, and I work late. How can I transition my office look to date night without having to run home?
A: Last minute plans? No problem. Pack a tote of essentials the night before, or stash them week long at your desk. Things like a pretty platform pump, a dressy jacket (try leather or a draped-front suede), a long, dangle earring, a statement stack of bangles, a clutch you can carry in your day bag, and a bright red lipstick that instantly glams up any look. Think quick-change chic!
Q: I’m clumsy and am always bound to spill. What emergency-kit essentials should I stock my bag with for my blind date?
A: Dinner, drinks, walking blocks and blocks—a backup plan is essential when you’re on the spot and full of nerves. Topping my list of don’t-forget-for-date-night must-haves: A pack of gum or mints, clear nail polish or a travel size hairspray to remedy a last-second run in your tights, a pair of foldable flats when the end of the night can’t come soon enough for your feet, and a travel size baby powder for any unwanted oil/food spills, to get the grease out of silk or fine fabrics. Can’t fit it all in your clutch? Use your coat pockets and make a run to the ladies room when you need. Time to make an impression!
