Making of the Collection: Fall 2012 Runway

•February 22, 2012 • Leave a Comment

This week we went behind the scenes to get all the inside deets on the film noir-inspired bebeBLACK Fall 2012 runway collection! Designer Charles Benton and fashion editor and stylist Beth Fenton dished on the inspiration behind the show, the key pieces every woman needs this fall and what they loved most about bringing bebeBLACK Fall 2012 to life.

STYLUST: Tell us about the inspiration behind the collection.

Charles: I definitely used the ’40s and ’80s as a starting point. The fact that I live in Hollywood helped my initial research. I wasn’t interested in the stars of today, I was interested in the stars from the ’30s and ’40s. Like Veronica Lake, who is feminine but also masculine in a way. Same with Rita Hayworth. It’s almost like they have a split personality, charming and beautiful but also very assertive. We borrowed from the ’80s, particularly Sean Young’s suiting, hair and makeup in Blade Runner. But really, I always sketch for the bebe girl, making sure that she looks stunning and loves the end result.

STYLUST: Who is this bebe girl? Where would she wear the collection?

Beth: The bebe girl is aware of her sexuality in a demure way, and this is reflected in the collection. I think with bebe it is key the spirit is playful and the pieces are versatile and accessible.

Charles: I think the collection is very broad. We made sure everything was classic and modern, interchangeable and could be worn with anything. You can make it modern, and you can make it classic. And to me bebe is really about class, it’s about sophistication. That really has always been Manny’s obsession. It’s to go out there and make sure that there’s a high level of attention to details and to really listen to what the customer wants and make her look beautiful.

STYLUST: Tell us a little bit about the styling in the show.

Beth: It was important to represent the strong, confident spirit of the women who inspired the collection: photographer Helmut Newton’s subjects and Hollywood film stars of the 1940s.

STYLUST: Do things change from L.A. to when you arrive in NYC and you’re actually fitting on the models?

Beth: There are always changes as the working process develops. It takes on a whole other dimension once the looks are fitted on the models. I like to create a believable character with the casting and the looks, like the seductress, the kooky kid, the tomboy.

STYLUST: What are the key silhouettes in this collection?

Beth: Definitely a strong shoulder. That’s been a conversation from the beginning.

Charles: The waist. It’s super powerful and very small.

Beth: And then a skinny leg with the cigarette pant. And the pencil skirt. Very sharp.

Charles: And there’s a super long maxi coat that we really love.

STYLUST: What are the key fabrics and pieces?

Charles: Leather is a very important material, like wool, that you would use for tailoring. It adds strength. We paid attention to lengths and cuts. Skirts are a bit longer, and we decided to go for a cigarette pant, something she could wear to work. The capes are updated for evening with attention paid to the shoulder.

Beth: Yes, the leather really adds strength—it punctuates the collection. The tailoring and dresses are key and the most empowering pieces to me. The quality of the faux fur and outerwear is impeccable. The leopard print coat and shadow plaid biker jacket are sharper with this strong shoulder.

STYLUST: What are your personal favorite looks?

Beth: I like the tuxedo cape over the tuxedo playsuit.

Charles: I really, really love the long coat. It just speaks to me. The length of it is very powerful. But there’s so much more; it’s really hard to just pinpoint one thing…

Trend Report: 7 Key Fall Trends from our Runway Collection

•February 20, 2012 • Leave a Comment

Now that we’ve survived fashion week in one piece, it’s time to give you the dish on key trends we’re most excited about from our very own runway collection. These powerful pieces answer all of the most important fall questions. What’s the go-to jacket? Perfect cocktail dress? Must-have accessory? Trending pattern? Low and behold, our bebe wardrobe checklist revealed…

1. THE CIGARETTE PANT
WHY WE LOVE IT>> It’s slimming! From work to cocktails to off-duty, this pant style possesses a retro-inspired cut that gives it a powerfully sharp edge.

HOW TO ROCK IT>> For day we recommend styling it with a silk blouse and classic black pump. For night?  We’d rock it with faux fur or plaid. If it’s one thing we learned last fall, it’s that faux fur instantly ups the glam factor.

2. SHEER BLACK
WHY WE LOVE IT>> It reveals just enough skin to be flirty without overdoing it, and therefore, makes the perfect cocktail dress.

HOW TO ROCK IT>> Look out for dresses with patterned sheer chiffon or dotted mesh. Nothing looks more alluring than a black evening dress with sheer panels.

3. THE CAPE JACKET
WHY WE LOVE IT>> It screams sophistication and it’s not too bulky. However casual the outfit you’re topping it with may be, all we see is an elegant lady.

HOW TO ROCK IT>> You can style it over anything! From work outfits to cocktail dresses, it makes the perfect everyday outerwear piece, and looks great with leather gloves.

4. FAUX FUR
WHY WE LOVE IT>> It ups the drama and gives any look a vintage-inspired It Girl vibe.

HOW TO ROCK IT>> This fall a light leopard fall jacket is the perfect mate to your wear-to-work. You can also throw a cropped faux fur jacket over rompers as a perfect way to transition between seasons.

5. LEATHER
WHY WE LOVE IT>> It’s an investment you’ll never regret. Plus, its glossiness clings to our bodies and gives us a tough, yet sultry, look.

HOW TO ROCK IT>> Don’t be afraid to go head-to-toe leather. We’re not talking motorcycle baby, we’re talking cocktail pretty. For instance, try a body-contouring dress with long leather gloves. Don’t be afraid to rock it at work either, a pencil dress with leather accents goes a long way.

6. PLAID

WHY WE LOVE IT>> When we see plaid, we’re instantly transported to place of hot cocoa and wintery lights. It’s the perfect fall fabric because it keeps us warm without hiding our figure and it has a flirty punk-chic punch.

HOW TO ROCK IT>> Try it on shorts, paired with graphic sheer tights or take it to work in a blazer jacket.

7. THE BOXY HANDBAG

WHY WE LOVE IT>> Nothing says you’re important like a luggage-inspired handbag. We’re in love with the glossy mock croc design. Not only is it almost a weapon, but we can rest-assured it’ll chic up any outfit.

HOW TO ROCK IT>> Pair them with anything from dresses to shorts to our fave cigarette pant.

Style Seen: 6 NYFW 2012 Celebrity Looks We’re Crushing on

•February 17, 2012 • Leave a Comment

While it’s true that most of what we saw walking down the New York Fashion Week catwalk wow’d us, we couldn’t help but take some serious style notes from its front rowers. From Leigh Lezark’s femme-fatale vibe to Jessica Alba’s standout colorblock, we’ve pulled together our top six favorite looks from NYFW. Don’t worry, they include styling tips on how to make them your very own. Pencils ready?

TEXTURE, TEXTURE! READ ALL ABOUT IT!

WHY WE LOVE IT>> With such an interesting pattern and texture, how we not love it? The gold-trimmed pump gives it a sophisticated edge that is so front-row worthy.

HOW TO ROCK IT>> Match your black and white patterned dress with a metallic-accented sandal and keep the accessories simple. Our suggestions? Slinky Printed Halter Dress (187465, $84), Tina Faux Leather Metallic Woven Sandal (188727, $159)

AS SEEN ON>>Rebecca Blumhagen (Jemal Countess/Getty)

SHEER GENIUS

WHY WE LOVE IT>> It’s no secret, we love Leigh Lezark! Not only does she have amazing taste in music (she’s played deejay to both of our runway shows), she has impeccable style. Pairing a sheer black top with a white and black patterned skirt and adding a punch of color with tomato red nail is a prime example.

HOW TO ROCK IT>> Don’t fear the sheer. There is a way to go about styling this look without causing a stir (although we’ll admit that sometimes it’s a good thing). Solution? Pair it with a matching cami. Off our rack: Cold Shoulder Lurex Dolman Sweater (190271, $74), The New Seamless Cami (172329, $19), Contrast Zigzag Skirt (195295, $49)

AS SEEN ON>> Leigh Lezark (Cindy Ord/Getty)

PENCIL THIS IN

WHY WE LOVE IT>> Amber Heard always looks so flawless! In this instance, she teamed her embroidered pencil dress with look-a-like sandals. And her signature red pout? Obsessed!

HOW TO ROCK IT>> Remember that matching isn’t limited to color. Take her cue and try matching patterns. Our picks: Fishnet Sleeve Dress – WEB EXCLUSIVE (191234, $59), Carmen Curved Crisscross Leather Sandal (192004, $159)

AS SEEN ON>> Amber Heard (Dimitrios Kambouris/Getty)

RACEY LACEY

WHY WE LOVE IT>> Give us lace and a bodycon silhouette and you know we’re on board. Look at that stunning neckline and the just-below-the-knee cut. Swoon!

HOW TO ROCK IT>> Play with black and red, we’re talking high-gloss. For example: Lace Inset 3/4 Sleeve Bodycon Dress – WEB EXCLUSIVE (186181, $69), Vera Patent Leather Cutout Sandal (192080, $129)

AS SEEN ON>> Stacy Keibler (Rabbani and Solimene Photography/Getty)

FINE PRINT

WHY WE LOVE IT>> This season marks the year of the midi and Dakota knows that a cut is nothing without a bold-hued print. And check out the cinched waist. Talk about a feminine profile!

HOW TO ROCK IT>> For a brighter pop, go for dresses with a saturated print on a dark background and match your shoes and accessories accordingly. Don’t be afraid to try the black nail color either. Try: Strapless Crossover Front Dress (189598, $129), Bianca Leather Snake Print Slingback (192000, $149)

AS SEEN ON>>Dakota Fanning (Rabbani and Solimene Photography/Getty)

THE HAUTE BLOCK

WHY WE LOVE IT>> We are totally feeling the colorblock love right now, but what better way to rock it than with a sexy neckline and in a stunning blue?  Plus, we’re totally crushing on the way she matched her lipstick to her nail color.

HOW TO ROCK IT>> Style your colorblock with a statement clutch, preferably one with a cool pattern or embellishments. Our picks? One Shoulder Colorblock Dress – bebe Addiction (193238, $119), Studded Wristlet Clutch (166755, $59)

AS SEEN ON>> Jessica Alba (Dimitrios Kambouris/Getty)

Tastemaker: Party Treats & Tips from Chef-Blogger Audrey Leary

•February 10, 2012 • 2 Comments

Throwing a Valentine’s party with your besties? Planning a glam Oscar Night bash? We’ve turned to pastry chef and style blogger Audrey Leary of Homerun Ballerina for some delectable festive recipes (just click the name of each to get the deets), plus read on for tips on hosting a chic celebration!

1. Chorizo and yellow onion-stuffed squid
2. Egg-cup custard
3. Ricotta-stuffed grapes
4. Spicy scallop ceviche
5. Pork dumplings
6. Savory soufflés
7. Lobster rolls
8. Raspberry vanilla macarons with dark chocolate ganache
9. Almond lemon-curd and blackberry tartlets

STYLUST: What’s your favorite dish to make for guests?

AUDREY: Probably crème brûlée. It’s really so easy to make, and infuse with seasonal herbs or what have you, and people are always blown away by it. It’s also great because you can make it a day ahead of time and focus on everything else day of.

STYLUST: What’s the best dinner party soundtrack?

AUDREY: My husband and I have a pretty out-of-control record collection, so we’ll usually just let the guests take turns putting on records. It works really well, and everyone gets to hear something they like.

STYLUST: Do you find that your personal style is in line with your cooking/baking aesthetic?

AUDREY: VERY much so. I’ve had multiple people tell me I dress like a macaron, which I guess is pretty true—I like to wear lots of bright colors, mixed together, just like a macaron.

STYLUST: What’s your biggest baking faux pas?

AUDREY: Probably the mess I make. I am an incredibly messy cook (as my husband will be the first to tell you).

STYLUST: What’s the quickest fix to a baking disaster?

AUDREY: Man, it really depends on the disaster—but I guess keep an open mind and be creative. If you have a pie that doesn’t work out, turn it into a crisp or a cobbler. If you have a curd that doesn’t set up, mix it with buttercream and frost cupcakes (or fill macarons) with it.

STYLUST: What are some easy, inexpensive ways to set the mood for a party?

AUDREY: Certainly to have some good music playing—Sam (my husband) is so good at making a playlist to get the night started, before the records start playing, that builds from quieter, background music to more upbeat and dance-y. I also really like to have a cocktail to greet people with—the last dinner party I had, I infused some gin with rosemary and topped that off with St. Germain, club soda and a sprig of rosemary. Instant party.

STYLUST: Are there any specific drinks you’d recommend for a Valentine’s party to complement certain dishes?

AUDREY: I really like to pick a couple bottles of wine—both red and white—which takes the guesswork out of pairing; or give me a glass of champagne any day.

As in love with Audrey’s culinary flair as we are? If you live in NYC, you are SO in luck. Just stop by the Greene Grape Annex, at 680 Fulton Street in Fort Greene, Brooklyn, where she’s the resident pastry chef, to taste her delicious—and totally gorgeous—creations!
